One of the most successful sides that the Saints have had in the “noughties”, the 2003/04 team went within a whisker of taking out the NSW Premier League title, failing by just goal difference, to concede the Premiership to Belconnen Blue Devils. Sadly, a five point lead with just four rounds to go was lost, three losses in the last four games cruelling our title hopes.
Coached by Manny Spanoudakis, and assisted by Aytek Genc, the team was chockful of St George stars, none more so than Simon Verrender who ultimately made 316 appearances for the club over 16 consecutive seasons, Vince Savoca who made in excess of 150 appearances, and ace striker Bruno Beddoni, who scored 37 goals in 52 appearances, over just three seasons.
Impressive tallies indeed.
Here is the match programme from that season’s semi final versus Bankstown City, a match we lost 2-1. The Saints went on to defeat Blacktown City 3-1 in the preliminary semi final, before being ousted by Belconnen 2-1, one step from the Grand Final.
