This week we look at the Australian World Cup squad from the 1990 qualifiers for Italia 90 and the final match in the Oceania group in April 1989. This was the final series of WC qualifiers which saw St George players involved, the club of course returning to State League prior to USA 94.
Three Saints players were picked for the squad v Israel…keeper Mike Gibson (father of Brad Gibson, who played for the Saints in our 2010 Grand Final, and now with Spirit FC), Andrew Koczka and Scott Ollerenshaw.
This match was also one of the first games held at the newly-built Sydney Football Stadium and a crowd of 40,320 attended. Unfortunately, with Australia needing a win to qualify for the playoff against Colombia, a 1-1 draw saw Israel go through.
