This week we take a look back to 1989 and to the NSL semi final series, the last time that the Saints played in NSL finals. We had finished second in the table behind Marconi, a position not too different to today’s NPL2 standings, interestingly, although under a much changed football landscape.
The results in those finals series showed how close the competition was, with the Saints defeating Sydney Olympic 1-0 in the qualifying semi with a lone goal from Scott Ollerenshaw, before losing to Marconi 1-0 in the major semi. Unfortunately, the Saints then went down 1-0 to Olympic in the preliminary final, a goal by Abbas Saad preventing the Saints from making a Grand Final appearance. Marconi went on to defeat Sydney Olympic 1-0 in the Grand Final in front of a crowd of 23,387.
Here are a few pages from the final series program, showing the respective squads of the Saints and Marconi, two teams heavy with international representatives of the day.
