This week we look at a match programme from 1992, the first season that St George returned the State League football, after its NSL days.
Football NSW put out a weekly magazine style program at the time, an excellent publication covering the state league scene. We take a look at the lineups across all the teams of the day, future coaches of the Saints amongst them. Nick Orlic, then at Canterbury Marrickville (now Bankstown Berries) who coached us in 2009 and 2010, taking the Saints to that year’s Grand Final, Paul Carter at Wollongong Macedonia (now Wollongong United) who coached us late 90s, and a certain number 6 at Eastern Suburbs, now at the helm.
Amongst the Saints lineup, Vince Savoca went on to have a fine career at both state league and NSL level, before coaching the Saints in 2006, whilst on loan Jason Van Blerk would be playing for Australia against Argentina in a World Cup playoff just over a year later.
The cover features the Saints’s Andre Spnovic up against Craig Foster, then of Avala (now Bonnyrigg White Eagles), now of course, at SBS.
