Our opening round of the season against Blacktown Spartans may have produced mixed results but there was certainly no lack of effort across all three grades on Sunday.
The under 18s may have gone down 2-0 in the first game of the day but the young Saints were always in with a shout and there is plenty to look forward in the coming weeks.
The day was then kickstarted along with an excellent win by our Under 20s with Bogdan Zivkov putting us in the lead early in the game before Spartans equalised midway through the first half. It looked headed for a draw until Mehmet Yagci put us back in front with eight minutes left. After a couple of heavy losses in preseason, the win in the opening game was nothing less than impressive!
That set the scene for our first grade, and things could hardly have started any better with Stevan Ilic putting the Saints in front in the 9th minute, after some wonderful work through the Spartans defence. That lead may have been shortlived but within two minutes of the Spartans drawing level, we were back in the lead, again through Stevan Ilic. We looked to be headed into half time a goal up, but a header from a corner in the 42nd minute for the Spartans made it 2-2 at the break.
Long range strikes gave the Spartans a two goal advantage before Stevan, with his hatrick, brought it back to 3-4 and a surge by the Saints, but a similar long range goal two minutes from time for the Spartans settled the result.
Next weekend we are away at Hills Brumbies on Saturday night, at Lily Homes Stadium in Seven Hills.
