This week we show the testimonial match programme from one of the clubs greats in the early 1980s. Dez Marton joined the Saints in 1981 and played for four seasons, finishing his career with Wollongong Wolves in 1985, but it was with the Saints that he is well remembered, a scorer of goals, goals and more goals.
Upon retirement in 1985, at the age of 37, the Saints put on a testimonial for Dez at St George Stadium, in an unusual match of three thirds. A Saints XI played Australia for the opening 30 minutes, before the final two thirds of the game featured a raft of NSL and international players at the time. Note the names of Frank Farina, Peter Raskopoulos and Robbie Slater to name just three amongst many.
And Dez can still be seen at our games, from time to time.
