History Week 15

In an occasional series, we will have a look at a major game from the St George match archives, with this week a review of the 1982 Ampol Cup Final.
The Ampol Cup was a preseason tournament sponsored by the Ampol petroleum company for approximately thirty years or so, from the 1950s, and was the traditional curtain raiser to the NSW state league season.
In 1982, St George won the tournament with a 1-0 extra time win over Sydney Croatia, with a late goal scored by Paul Wilkinson. It was our first season back in the national league, and the Ampol Cup win was to prove to be the start of a successful year, with St George also winning the top 4 championship at the end of the season, and a second placed finish in the league.
The Ampol Cup teams for both clubs were quality sides, and topical now with Robbie Slater taking the field for the Saints, whose son Tom is now with the club, and current Bankstown Berries coach, Wally Savor, a member of that Croatia side.
Here is a copy of the match programme from that game along with a match report as covered by Australian Soccer Weekly.
