The 25th Anniversary Kanga Cup was held in Canberra last week with a record 352 teams competing in the tournament in various age groups from all over Australia, including teams from New Zealand and Korea and our own St George FC team.
Our team competed in the Males U11’s Kanga Cup division and is the first time that St George FC has fielded an U11’s team in the tournament.
Led by coach Kerry Lambos our tournament campaign never lost focus as he instilled into the players, the discipline, commitment, passion and team work necessary to enable them to compete and be serious contenders for the U11’s Kanga Cup championship.
This was particularly evident by the manning in which the players acknowledged and responded to Kerry’s mantra having finished undefeated in all their scheduled games and on top of their pool table and going on to earn a spot in the finals.
Despite drawing with Apia Leichardt Tigers in the semi-finals, Glen Eira (a Victorian based team) went thru on goal difference to play St George FC in the finals.
Whilst the U11’s finals were played in wet conditions our team played brilliant football consistent with their form throughout the tournament which showcased individual player skills and cohesive team work.
Leading throughout the game, our team won with a resounding 6-2 victory over Glen Eira to win the 2015 U11’s Kanga Cup championship.
Our U11’s players and coach Kerry Lambos should be congratulated on this incredible achievement as well as the manner in which they represented and distinguished themselves and the Club throughout the tournament and the honour that winning the Championship has bestowed upon the club.
A special thank you and acknowledgment also goes to John Peridis the U11’s team manager for all his efforts in getting the team to Canberra and for co-ordinating the clubs participation in the tournament.
