This week we delve into the 1960s and include a photograph showing St George coming onto the field for a match against South Coast Utd at Woonona Oval on 13 July 1969.
It was a year in which the Saints ended up finishing second in the league to South Coast Utd, who won the title with 33 points, finishing just one point ahead of St George. The Saints had beaten South Coast 7-1 at home earlier in the season, but lost this fixture 2-1.
The importance of this match was clear, with a crowd of 7,543 attending.
The St George players in the photo are:
Don Sandell, Mike Denton (obscured), Atti Abonyi, Tom Anderson, David Cliss, Manfred Schaefer and Geoff Bird.
The other Saints players that day, who aren’t in this photo were John Warren, Frank Haffey, Alan Ainslie and Roger Hillary.
St George went on to make the Grand Final that season but lost to APIA 3-2, after a replay.
