St George WSL Versus Springwood Round 8
posted by Artie on May 17, 2011
A perfect morning greeted us as we travelled to The Blue Mountains on Sunday to take on Springwood United at Summerhayes Park.
In easily our best day of the season so far, we bought home 12 club championship points from a possible 15. A great day!
12’s
After 2 losses in a row our 12’s were looking to get back into the winners circle. Springwood were playing a defensive formation and we were peppering their goal keeper from the outset. Eventually, we broke down their resolve and posted our first goal. Springwood tried valiantly but could just not match our attacking waves and more St George goals followed. We ran out eventual winners by 7-0. A good effort by our girls and a special “well done” to Danea and Jade!
14’s
After playing out three draws so far this season, the 14’s went to Springwood believing that this was to be the day we picked up a win. The Springwood side played with a very defensive formation and our girls found the going tough. After a first half where most of the play was concentrated in the Springwood half, we were unable to convert our dominance and went to the break 0-0. Springwood continued to hold us out until, in the last couple of minutes, we finally converted one of our chances to take a 1-0 lead. A very well deserved win by the girls and I believe we have now turned the corner. Special mention to Stephanie and Amelia who both put in great efforts!
16’s
The 16’s had a morale boosting mid week draw against UNSW and were looking to go one better this weekend. With Coach Andrew sidelined with chicken pox, it was left to Russel to take charge! The girls took control of the game from the kick off and never really looked in danger of losing the game. It was a torrid affair but our girls proved far too strong in the long run to run out comfortable winners 4-1.
The three R’s, Rebecca, Rachel and Rachelle all performed very strongly.
Reserve Grade
Once again injury and unavailability of players caused a major headache for coach Ross. With 5 players not being able to play, no bench and without a recognised Goal Keeper it was always going to be a struggle. However, the girls who were there fought till the bitter end and made the opposition fight for the three points. Laura and Zina played themselves to a standstill but, alas, it was not to be. Springwood 6-1.
First Grade
After a very lacklustre performance on Sunday, the girls were keen to make amends and to show that they were a team to be reckoned with. Sitting on the bottom of the table on zero points, it was now or never. Fortunately, it was NOW! In one of their better performances the girls dominated from start to finish running out eventual winners 2-0. Goals were scored by Jess and Suzie. Well done girls, now to make a run for the semis!
