Super Youth League Round 5 Review

posted by Artie on April 11, 2011

Round 4 saw us once again playing at home against competition newcomers Northbridge.

The day started in bright sunshine, however the weather worsened as the day wore on. A reasonably good analogy of the day on the field as well.

3 Club Championship points were earned by us to 12 points by Northbridge.

12’s
The 12’s are on a roll at the moment having now played 4 games and won all 4. Once again the girls had a slow start to the game and entered the sheds at half time trailing 0-1. The half time pep talk had the girls firing in the second half.  After a period of attack, we were awarded a penalty which was duly dispatched to the back of the net to level the scores at 1-1. This seemed to lift the girls even more and was followed by another 2 goals. Jacklyn Gabriel continued her strong start of season form and was once again prominent throughout the game. A final score of St George 3 – Northbridge 2 leave our girls atop the table.

14’s
After consecutive draws over the past 2 games the girls were looking to score their first win of the season.
However, it was not to be. Despite battling bravely, the girls were overcome by a strong Northbridge outfit, finally going down 1-5.  Full credit to the girls for their fighting sprit and special mention goes to Milly Upstone who played a very strong game. Young Aslhea Leyton also looked very sharp in front of goals and we look forward to our contest against the Gladesville Ravens next Sunday.

16’s
Coming off their first win last weekend the girls were looking to consolidate, however due to prior commitments, 4 of the team were unavailable. In what was the best game of the day both teams gave it everything they had. With Northbridge scoring the first 2 goals and St George bravely fighting back to bring the score line to 1-2 late in the second half it was a real ding dong of a battle!  With the crowd urging our girls on to try to find the equaliser and the Northbridge crowd urging their charges to hold out the final minutes were a tense affair.
To their credit the Northbridge girls held firm but our girls walked off with heads held high. Rachelle Wang, still recovering from a bout of glandular fever, ran her into the ground and was everywhere.
I eagerly await the second round clash between these two teams

Reserve Grade
After showing a remarkable turn around last week, our reserve grade team took to the field with a degree of confidence. After an evenly contested first half, oranges were taken with a 0-0 scoreline and both teams rueing missed chances. The second half was a more one sided affair with Northbridge finally taking the match in a comfortable 0-4 result. The signs are definitely there for this St George team and if they can put in performances like they did the week before and in the first half this week, a win is just around the corner.

First Grade
With two great performances under their belt but no points to show for it, the girls were primed for the game. Playing great football in the first half we turned around surprisingly down 0-2 on the scoreboard. Shortly after half time the Northbridge ladies scored a third goal and we were behind the eight ball.
Showing great courage the girls hung in there till the end with Suzie Gallagher scoring a tidy goal. This team is playing very good football at the moment but results are not going our way. Final score line of 1-5.

Both First and reserve grade have catch up games on Tuesday night against APIA and next week the club travels to Gladesville Ravens.
