Round 2 saw us travel to picturesque Blick Oval to take on new comers Sydney Olympic.
The upshot of the day was 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.
8 Club Championship points were earned by us to 5 points by Olympic.
It was our first winning day in Club Championship points for a while and all praise to the girls and coaches for their commitment and efforts on the field.
It is too early to make any predictions but it is the opinion of this reporter that the Club has turned the corner.
The club has already scored more goals this season after only 2 and a half rounds than we scored last season. In point of fact, the 12’s alone have achieved that feat!
Once again I make special mention to the parents of the younger girls for their support and their “vocal” input!
12’s
The 12’s have had a great start to the season and after winning their first 2 games in impressive fashion, were primed for the game against Olympic.
The first half was an evenly contested affair with the Saints going to the break with a slender 1-0 lead.
Whatever was said by coach Glen at halftime certainly had the desired effect with the girls coming out for the second half breathing fire. 5 unanswered goals gave the Saints a 6-0 victory. This team has now scored 23 goals and is yet to concede one. Stiffer opposition is just around the corner but they have certainly had a good start to 2011. Well done girls, keep it up!
14’s
Coming off a draw to APIA 1-1mid week, the 14’s were up against a more fancied opposition this week and the girls were pumped for a big effort.
The game was a real arm wrestle from the kick off and neither team could get on top for any substantial period of time. The final result was a 1-1 draw. Coach John and assistant coach George were reasonably happy with the result but both lamented missed opportunities. This team has not been together for long and are improving each week. Their first win is just around the corner and I feel they will have a good season.
16’s
After scoring a 1-1 draw mid week against the fancied APIA team, the 16’s took the field with a sense of belief in themselves and it showed!
With a host of the team making the step up from club football, the girls are now starting to show the potential they have. The teamwork is becoming more evident and their counter attacking is a beautiful sight to behold.
Coach Andrew and assistant Russel are seeing the results of their labours and this team can achieve anything if they put their minds to it.
Special mention to keeper Adriana Maras who’s work between the sticks is outstanding.
There were two saves yesterday which alone were worth the trip to the game.
Reserve Grade
The reserve grade team played a real shocker last week and were mauled 11-0, so all eyes were on them to see how they would react.
Coach Ross obviously pushed the right buttons during training because it was a totally different attitude from the girls yesterday. It was hard to believe it was the same team.
From the opening whistle the girls fought hard for every ball and gave it everything they had. No quarter was asked for and none was given. The level of commitment was plainly evident and it is a credit to the girls to come back from being down 0-1 to gain a respectable 1-1 draw.. The introduction of Tiarna Carmont by the coach was a master stroke and soon the girls were celebrating their first point of the season. Well done ladies, a great turn around in 7 days!
First Grade
The first grade team were written off by the critics before the season had started and yesterday they showed how wrong the arm chair players can be. In a tough encounter they played themselves to a standstill and were unlucky not to come away with at least a draw for their efforts. The loss of key new signing, defender Tara Simpson, very early in the first half was a major blow but the girls in Red and White refused to buckle. Coach Ross Gardner was a tad despondent after the game, having watched his team play well enough on consecutive weekends to win both games but coming up empty handed.
My advice to Ross and the girls is to hang in there. A win is mighty close and you should hold your heads high.
Next week pits us against another newcomer, Northbridge, at home and a chance to consolidate on yesterdays performances.
