NSW Women's Super League Round 3 Preview
posted by Artie on April 1, 2011
The Super League table could be forgiven for looking a little unorthodox two rounds in, with only three sides having played all of their games. One coach that will not mind is Edd Terry, whose Lady Hawks have taken maximum points from their opening two games and sit atop the table as early pacesetters.
After two shortened rounds to open the season, week three should see all the teams finally get a chance to show their stuff. One such team is APIA Leichardt who, despite being labeled as finals favourites, have yet to play a game. It's Tigers v Tigers at Wilson Park on Sunday as their rivals from the north head to town to try their luck against last year's Grand Finalists.
The Northern Tigers got their first point of the season last week at home to Nepean, and will be looking to build some momentum. It's hard to see APIA throwing this one away however, with their players surely jumping out of their skin after the delayed season start. Northern Tigers young side will put up a fight and could just spring an upset should APIA show any signs of rustiness. Leaders Lady Hawks play host to another impressive first round victor, Eastern UNSW Lions.
The Lions got a rest last week as their match with APIA was postponed. Lady Hawks earned themselves a smash-and-grab away win at St George and will take all the momentum into this matchup. Probably the most intriguing fixture of round three, this one looks hard to call. Both sides have impressed in their limited outings so far, so don't surprised if this one produces some goals.
Sydney Olympic play their first home fixture of the season this weekend, and their opponents in this one are St George, who will be eager to make amends for last weeks disappointing result against Lady Hawks. The Saints looked in control for much of the first half, only to concede two late goals that Parramatta took all the way to the final whistle. Olympic will be on a high after their first three points and should go in as favourites. If St George can produce the kind of football they did in the first half against Lady Hawks it could prove to be a cracker of a match.
Heading up to the mountains it's the battle of the west between Springwood and Nepean. Springwood went down 3-0 to Gladesville last time out but will take heart from their performance against one of the competitions stronger sides. Nepean can also take heart after they picked up a point away to Northern Tigers. Back on home turf they should get their first three points of the season, assuming they keep up the solid form they have showed over the first two rounds. The final fixture pits Gladesville Ravens up against an unlucky Northbridge, whose three goals in round two couldn't guarantee them any points against a rampant Olympic attack.
They will need to show the same potency in front of goal once again if they are going to take anything from a Gladesville side that has so far performed to expectations. As we head into April the competition is already hotting up, with the big guns beginning to flex their muscles. It should be another exciting round in the Women's Super League. Source FNSW
