St George WSL

Since my last report, we have played 3 games and I will give an overall synopsis.
Our mighty Midgets, the Under 12’s, keep getting pitted against girls twice their size but refuse to lie down. Round 10 on Sunday 7th of June saw St George run out deserved winners against the plucky PCYC outfit with a scoreline of 3-2. We had a scare when the visitors took an early lead but we pegged them back to grab the three points. Monday 8th of June saw us lining up in an away game against the Northern Tigers in a catch up from round 8. Unfortunately for us, the much bigger Tigers outfit were too strong on the day. We fought hard from whistle to whistle but were beaten 5-0. Sunday 14/6/2009saw us travel to Lisarow to pit ourselves against the Central Coast, another team that dwarfed our girls for size but not for spirit. A 4-1 scoreline against us was not a true indication of the game and once again our team did us proud. The girls are currently sitting in 5 spot which is a remarkable achievement.
The Under 14’s have fared a little better over the last three games, winning 2 and losing one. Against PCYC, we had a very good 4-0 victory, with Georgia Lardis finding the back of the net twice, and special mention to Kylie Gioukaris & Georgia Koinis who filled in between the posts. Monday’s game against the Nth Tigers saw us once again run out winners in a hard fought battle. The final score was 1-0 and it was a great win for the team. Coaches Russell and Andrew were smiling broadly. We were not so fortunate against the Central coast on Sunday. The final score of 2-1 to the Central coast was not a true indication of the game, but it is hard to win when the other team has an extra player who happens to be holding the whistle! In a topsy turvey table the girls currently sit in 6th spot but with a game in hand are still more than capable of shouldering their way into the top 4.
The Under 16’s were still trying to regain the form that saw them draw with the Western Panthers. The game against PCYC saw us up against one of the title favourites and we tested them all the way before going down by 3-1. The Tigers game saw us up against another team in the top 4, and we played with plenty of passion again, before going down by 2-0. The trip to Lisarow was made sweet by the girls having their first victory of the season in a well deserved 2-0 win.
Reserve grade have been decimated by injuries so far this season and this has made it difficult to record wins. The game against PCYC saw us go down 3-2 after opening up a 2 goal lead early in the game. A couple of missed chances cost us dearly. Thanks to the 16’s who helped out and also to the 2 Under 14’s who stepped up for us. Young R Dennis came on as a replacement and showed she is a player to keep an eye on! J Martinez scored her first goal in reserves and continues to impress. The game against the Tigers saw us depleted to our lowest level of players for the season and we asked for volunteers from the 14’s and 16’s to help us. Once again showing great club spirit no less than 3 under 16’s and 3 under 14’s volunteered their services. P Pearson, J Carosi and P Oliveria form the 16’s and J Martinez, G Koinis and A Seilkas from the 14’s proves d what club spirit is all about. Even though the final score was 6-1 against us, all the girls did us proud. I am especially proud of the way that the regular squad members have appreciated the assistance we have been getting from our “younger” members. Girls, I am proud to be associated with you.
The final game of the three saw us take on the Central Coast. With Fagan and Dee back on deck, we needed to only borrow 3 of our 16’s. Thanks Prue, Jamie and Jess. We finally broke through for our second win of the season against the coast with a well deserved 4-2 victory. The effervescent Holly scoring twice and relishing in her reunion with the indomitable Fagan who also found the back of the net. Amanda Wilson rounded out the scorers. With a couple of players still to make their return from injury, I expect this tem to win more games before the season is over.
First grade managed a draw against the PCYC team, 1-1. We took an early lead but the PCYC ladies kept pressing and managed to equalise. Our captain Nat was stretchered off very early in the first half but the good news is she will be back on deck shortly as the injury was not as serious as it looked. Our defence held firm with Brooke having a wow of a game. Our goalkeeper, Rani Hayman was once again as safe as houses. Against the Nth Tigers we suffered a setback, going down by 2-0. In a very evenly poised game, the lack of fresh substitutes ended up being our undoing. Our final game saw us beaten by 5-0. We came up against a very hot central Coast team and we were unable to contain them. With the imminent return of Captain Nat and possibly Evelina (Sweden) this tam still has plenty to offer. Currently sitting 9th on the ladder, I have no doubt that a run of victories is just around the corner and we will be charging up the table.
