WSL ROUND 5 v Blacktown
posted by Artie on May 14, 2009
The day started off on the wrong foot, with our under 12’s going down to a much bigger Blacktown team, 3-1. they are still well within touch of the top 4. This weekends clash with Bathurst will be a must see!
The Under 14’s then stepped up to the plate and scored an impressive 1-0 win. This has moved them into 5th place with a game in hand, albeit against the team running 4th. The catch up between these 2 teams will be a beauty.
Thanks to Des Marten for coaching the team whilst the current coach is unavailable. A 0-0 draw was the result and both teams played quality football.
Reserve Grade.
Thanks to Paloma and Prue for once again filling in for us. In an enthralling encounter, our reserves played some entertaining football but were unable toregister their first win for the season. With injured players returning in the not to distant future, this side has plenty of potential and it is just a case of waiting for it to come together. Hopefully this will happen very soon.
On a brighter note, we scored our first goals for the season. Whilst the official scoresheet lists 1 goal to Paloma and one own goal, we will credit Paloma with both! Samira looked busy throughout the game and Nat G led by inspiration. Hopefully we can register a win on Thursday night against PCYC!
First Grade.
A win at last!
After 3 games without tasting victory, the girls certainly looked primed for this one. Even the warm up had a fighting spirit to it.
Facing a Blacktown team who had registered 2 wins and a draw from 5 games we knew we were in for a tough game.
It would be fair to say the first half belonged to St George. With the defence looking solid, the midfield was allowed to push forward and create chances. With Kirra and Evelina looking dangerous out wide and Alisha and Nyrie commanding the midfield, it looked to be a matter of time till we rattled the net.
Rebecca was playing her best game of the season and Lauren was creating havoc up front.
Midfielder Nyrie English eventually capitalized on our attacking play and scored a well deserved goal. Nyrie obviously enjoyed scoring so much that she decided to do it again 2 minutes later. Evelina Vagesjo (our Swedish import) then decided to have her name entered into the scoresheet with a 45th minute goal. Coach Fletch had a smile like the Cheshire cat as the girls left the field at half time, leading 3-0.
Blacktown came out in the second half breathing fire and our defence was tested on many occasions. Brooke, Nat, Shen and Roberta held firm and repelled everything that was thrown at them. Goalkeeper Kerrie again impressed with her fearlessness in charging off her line to thwart many a threatening Blacktown move. There was a sobering incident when Shen was carried off with a knee injury. We all hope it is not too serious and wish her a speedy recovery.
Blacktown continued to press but the whole team defended magnificently. Sylvia, who replaced the injured Shen, threw herself at anything that moved and managed to stay on her feet for long periods of the game!!!
Blacktown finally melted our resolve, scoring from a well taken free kick in the 88th minute but our girls ran out convincing winners 3-1 on the day.
7 points to each club in the club championship.
