St George WSL Round 4 v Sydney Tigers

posted by Artie on April 28, 2009

We travelled to beautiful downtown Leichhardt on Sunday looking for an improvement on last weeks results and started the round with a 1-0 win to the Under 12’s. In a tense affair, St George scored with the final kick of the game. Coach John was a relieved man after the game! The under 14’s kept the momentum going with a well deserved win, defeating a gallant Sydney Tigers by 2 goals to zero. This team has plenty of potential and are starting to show it. A few more games as a team will do he wonders. The under 16’s played a very gutsy game and were unfortunate to be beaten by the odd goal, with the final scoreline of 100 to the Sydney Tigers. Coach Enzo was philosophical after the game and once this team clicks into gear they will be a force to be reckoned with. Reserve grade were handed a bit of a touch up, going down by 5-0. Once again we called upon the 16’s to assist due to injury and unavailability of some players. Prue and Paloma stepped into the breach and showed the talent they have to offer. Thanks girls! The game swung on an incident when Laura Fagan was carried off the field with the scoreboard reading 0-0. This seemed to take the wind form our sails and we conceded a couple of “easy” goals. Craig will no doubt offer a few words of wisdom at training on Tueday night! We hope that the injury to “Fagan” is not serious and we hope to see her back on the field soon. Her play was inspirational whilst she was on the field. 1st Grade. Whilst not earning a victory, the team left the field with heads held high. Playing one of the “gun” teams of the competition we were beaten, but not defeated, by a scoreline of 2-0. The return of Brooke in the backs gave our backline some starch, whilst Evelina’s return caused the opposition some real headaches in attack. I could name each player for their efforts as everyone gave their all. A few perplexing decisions (given both ways) added to the mystery of the game. The girls will take a lot of heart out of this game and the winners circle is not very far away! Our next full round is at home on Sunday, when we take on the Ravens at St George Stadium. This will be our first home game at the stadium for a while and I am sure all teams will be out to make it a fitting home coming.
